I just got back on Wednesday from spending one week in New York City. I
spent the first couple of nights staying in Williamsburg in Brooklyn and then
after picking up Lærke from the airport, we shared an apartment room in
Harlem. Lærke had been studying in Algoma in Canada for the
past semester so it was the first time we had seen each other since the start
of January in Reykjavik so it was so lovely to meet in New York.
I had intended to have been
finished with essays before I left, but I ended up writing my final essay for
University of Iceland both on the plane and on the first day in New York.
However, I made it as nice as possible for myself and completed the paper in
the nicest cafe in Brooklyn that was playing jazz and was full of plenty of
other people who were also on their laptops. In the evening and the following
day I just took very long walks around Brooklyn.
I made it to Dumbo on the second day which is an old
industrial area that lies between Manhattan Bridge
and Brooklyn Bridge (and I found out the name Dumbo comes from the acronym
Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). I had been recommended to go there
by my dear friend Jonas and I am so glad I made the effort to walk
there because it was such a nice area. Many of the old factory buildings now
house galleries, cafes and several very nice bookshops which I spent a lot of
time browsing.
I took the train to Coney Island the following day and had a long walk along the boardwalk.
.
In the evening I picked up Lærke from the airport and we headed to our apartment which came complete with a cat called Louis <3
We
met up with my Aunt Brenda in the morning and walked along the High
Line park, an old elevated railway line that has been converted into a
mile long garden.
The
rest of the day we spent walking around Manhattan, and sitting in cafes and
catching up.
We
ate a really good breakfast at our apartment the next day, with some nice
things we had bought at Chelsea market, and then spent the day in Central Park.
On
our last full day we went to Museum Of Modern Art and in the evening we saw
Heathers- the musical, which was hilarious.
Breakfast
in Harlem, and then a walk over to Wards Island, and a final lie-down in
Central Park before we headed to the airport in the evening.
SUCH a great trip.
